May has been busy for exhibitions and last Friday, on 24th May we had opened a collective exposition called Ecocide. What does this term mean? Ecocide is the extensive damage to, destruction of or loss of ecosystem(s) of a given territory, whether by human agency or by other causes, to such an extent that peaceful enjoyment by the inhabitants of that territory has been or will be severely diminished.

The idea of making exhibition on this topic, came after Alecs read an article in newspaper about a British barrister Polly Higgins, who led a decade-long campaign for “ecocide” to be recognized as a crime against humanity.

Together with 12 artists from different parts of Spain and Europe, we have prepared this exhibition, to raise an awareness about the Earth. There are 7 participating artists from Spain, 2 from Italy, one from Slovakia, one from Norway and one from Netherlands. Each brought different types of art piece such as painting, photography, installation, graphics or pencil sketch.

To demonstrate the effects of climate change on the mankind, all people presented in the gallery had lied down on the floor, pretending to be death. Everyone stayed in this position for a while, in the silence, which made the effect even stronger. After this experience, people could enjoy the performance of an artist from Basque – Sonia, who, during the sound of heartbeat, had used her half naked body to paint on the wall, on which was screened the planet Earth. She concluded her performance by writing the words “Just feel”.

People enjoyed the rest of the evening by chatting, getting know the artists, taking some refreshments and looking at the presentation of photos on the topic of climate changes and Earth destruction, from all around the world.

The exhibition will be open one month, so everyone is welcomed to visit gallery of Soppa de Azul and see the art works!
